There are people in
our lives that make an
impact on us.
A lot of those just
happen to be teachers.
Here is a chance to say
thanks.
Please tell us who you are.
Schools were closed, then opened, then closed and opened again. Kids were sent home to quarantine and Zoom classrooms became all the norm. Teachers did as best they could. Parents, caught off guard, put in that extra effort to support their children’s learning. Often it was an overwhelming experience. But parents and teachers came to see each other in a new light.

Now with schools open and teachers back in class, it's time to reflect on what we've all been through and how we've depended on each other. And now, on World Teachers Day, let's throw teachers a well-deserved 'thank you.'
"On behalf of Alberta's teachers, thank you, parents for all you have done over the last 18 months to help support learning to continue."
– Jason Schilling, ATA President

I’d like to thank Diane Duncan who helped me see the potential in myself as a high school drop out and single mom taking academic upgrading. She convinced me I was smart enough and able to go to university and receive two degrees. One of which was my education degree. As a teacher now, I will always remember how Diane made me feel confidence in myself.
    Thank you, Diane!

Mrs.Bowersock taught me both grade 6, and grade 7. She made me believe in the power of education, and supported the idea that being smart was COOL ♥️ I will forever treasure my time in your classroom

Thank you all for constantly adapting, pivoting, changing plans (on a minutes notice sometimes), always with smiles on your faces. My children idolize you and my husband and I could not be more thankful to have such amazing people teaching our children. You are so integral to our lives and communities, yet you rarely get the recognition you deserve. THANK YOU!

You are all angels!!! You did your utmost to bring our young ones through this last horrible 19 months any way you could. The dedication I’ve seen has been enlightening! Thank you from the bottom of my heart… truly! Now I know you have the fight in you to get the TRUTH brought into the curriculum. You are the key to respecting diversity and ending racism. I think you have in your hands the generation that will bring this about !

Too many to thank individually, but to all the teachers who taught not just curriculum, but compassion, communication, critical thinking, faith to me, my kids and grandkids – please know that you are remembered and deeply valued.

As a teacher myself, I know the hard work that goes into a teacher’s daily life. This is not a 9-to-5 job. We bring home marking, planning, preparation and every concern we have about every student. Teaching is not a job but a lifestyle. I don’t know any teacher who closes the door on his or her classroom on a Friday and leaves it behind. Constantly trying to improve lessons, staying up to date with technology and the ever changing tide of public opinion is exhausting. Throw in a pandemic, increasing numbers of students with exceptional needs, unrelenting expectations from parents, a rapidly rising cost of living (with no change in wages) and one would think twice about entering this profession. Yet, the absolute joy of working with students and seeing them learn and grow and develop a deeper sense of self is priceless. I’d do it all over again in a heartbeat. And, I’ll wager, so would the vast majority of us. Thank you, fellow teachers. It isn’t easy but it is worth it.

Sharron Onciul, you changed my life! You took a little grade three kid who struggled in school, who had no confidence in herself and turned her into the teacher I am today. You showed me that someone cared. You got me the supports I needed and showed me I could accomplish anything I wanted. Because of you and your kindness, I am an advocate for teachers and education. I am proud to call you my friend. Thank you!

So many wonderful teachers in my life many years ago. I’m 73 so it was different then but my kids who went to school in North Edmonton had wonderful teachers and I’m still friends with a few of them. My daughter loved her teachers so much that she went through to be a teacher and is a music specialist with EPS.

It is only education that our young can grow and develop to face and resolve the challenges before us. It is more important now than ever before.

As a principal I am so thankful for the dedication, passion, and perseverance teachers demonstrate everyday! Especially during the pandemic, teachers have been called to pivot and respond in new ways. Teachers continue to put students first and they want the best for them academically, socially and emotionally.

Teachers have traditionally had a very difficult, yet rewarding, job. The pandemic has added a layer of stress that could have broken you and pushed you to leave the profession.
What I observed was that teachers rose to the challenge. They delivered on-line instruction and maintained those critical teacher-student relationships. They weathered the increased volume of parental questions and comments. They became masters of technology. When classrooms once again opened up, they added sanitization to their load. They dealt with the layer of anxiety that students carried on their shoulders, counselling them through their fears. They reassured parents that school is a safe place. Teachers supported each other through all of this. And, through all of it, teachers taught!
Thank you to our teachers. You do amazing things with and for our students! Please accept my virtual, socially distanced hugs to all of you!

Our son is neuro-divergent and he hasn’t always had teaching staff who “get” him. There were some very challenging days at school. But for the last two years, Miss Terry and Mrs. Wells have poured everything they have into him. He feels supported, and safe, more confident than in years past, and most importantly he feels loved. When a teacher makes a connection with a student, that student will do anything for that teacher. These two have also shown others in the school what our son needs, and have shone light into those dark spaces. We are so incredibly grateful these two showed up at our school when they did. They have honestly changed the trajectory of his academic career and I can’t thank them enough.

    Dear Teachers in Alberta,

I have been a parent watching the growth of two little boys at school until their graduation. These were tough years for us as well as for their teachers. My boys had learning problems which required extra help, understanding and dedication, all of which they received from you. I am so grateful for your skills and caring. I have heard similar stories from other parent friends from across the province. My boys are men now who are working and contributing to the Alberta economy!
I can’t even begin to imagine the stress and worry you have gone through and are still going through in trying to keep your students safe and their learning needs met through Covid. This is particularly true in risking your own safety and facing budgetary cutbacks to staffing and cutbacks that I have heard about in grants to support children with special needs. My heart and my support goes out to everyone of you! You truely are heroes even if it is not being acknowledged by our government. Please know that you are in our hearts ❤️ and I will do everything I.can to acknowledge your outstanding contributions to our future – our kids 🧑‍🦽🤸🧍❗
